Teaching Thursdays: How Do I Use Your Site?

direction
This Teaching Thursday may not be the most exciting, but with all the new readers I want you to know where to find the tools to save the most!  I have taken a lot of time and effort to try to make my site as user friendly as possible.  While I know that I don't have *everything* here - there are a lot of useful features that can be helpful. If you are new to my site, the best place to start is to take a look at my "New To Coupons? Start Here!" page.  This gives an overview of how to use coupons to maximize your savings as well as gives some great resources. If you've been around awhile there are some good resources to know about - my top header bar is full of useful tools for you!

Coupon Database, Catalinas, Ordering Coupons, Printing Coupons

Have you ever just known there was a coupon out there for an item but didn't know where to find it?  Check out the Coupon Database to be able to search for that coupon!  Want to order from a coupon clipper but don't want to get taken for a ride?  My Order Coupons page has clippers that I have personally ordered from and would recommend to anyone! Want to print coupons?  Head to the right side bar and you have easy access to load Cellfire, print Red Plum and Coupons.com at the touch of a button! Another feature I have on my site is the Catalina page.  I try to keep this as up to date and accurate as possible - listing the current Catalina deals at the stores (typically Kroger and Meijer, a few others at times).  Not only do I list the information here for you, but I also list any available coupons that correspond with the catalina.

Print Friendly

I have saved my favorite feature for last.  At the end of each post, you'll see a green button that says "print friendly".  If you click on this it will bring up the post in a print friendly format (hence, the name print friendly :-) )  What is nice about this feature is that you can delete images, as well as delete any other information you do not want!  I love this as you are able to make a customized shopping list based on the weekly sales - with no extra ink wasted on items you don't want on your list!

Teaching Thursday: Coupon Etiquette

people
With this week's hot lysol deals at Meijer and the extreme difficulty that *most* people have had finding them (before yesterday when they started limiting!) I think this week's Teaching Thursday will be useful to focus on coupon etiquette. I have touched on this before but feel that it might need to be revisited.  There are several "rules" of couponing that you want to follow - this makes it better for everyone involved! 1.  Use a coupon the way it was intended to be used - and only for that use! If a coupon states that it is to be used on Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen cleaner, then it can only be used on that product.  You can't use it to buy toilet cleaner or spray.  Also, if a coupon specifies a certain flavor or type of a product, it can only be used on that type.  This brings to mind the Capri Sun Sunrise coupon that was out a few week's ago.  Only Capri Sun Sunrise should have been purchased with that coupon - not Roarin' waters, not other flavors, etc.  Why is this a big deal?  Who cares, right? Well - I'll tell you who it matters to!  For one, it matters to the manufacture, who is issuing coupons to increase sales of a certain type of product.   If they meant for the coupon to be used on any flavor, they would just label the coupon as "any"... the fact that they have specified a type means they are looking to drive sales on that particular product.  Another person it matters to is the store.  When stores redeem their coupons they have to show verification that the product specified in the coupon was sold.  If it doesn't meet what the manufacture meant for it to be sold on (going back to the manufactures interest in correct coupon use) then they will not be reimbursed - therefore losing money. This last point brings me to the last person that is concerned with correct use:  It matters to YOU!  As coupon users, we need to be concerned with proper (and improper!) use of coupons.  If stores are consistently burned by someone not using correctly, they are likely to begin to place limits or just flat out stop taking coupons.  This recently happened in one of my family members towns at a smaller grocery and I would not want to see that happen here! 2. Don't clear the shelves! This is especially on my heart this week as I know that a lot of people were wanting to get some of that super cheap Lysol at Meijer (myself included!).  Unfortunately, if you didn't get up at the crack of dawn on Sunday, it was mostly gone by Tuesday.  Meijer (at least in Florence) has now started limiting to two per customer to help with stocking issues.  While I completely understand wanting to get in on a great deal and build your stockpile, be sure that you are leaving enough for others.  Buying 10 of a product when there are 400 on a shelf isn't so much a concern, but buying 10 when there are only 11 on the shelf is a concern.  Some stores will also let you do a special order, so if you are wanting a large quantity either special order for that or plan on multiple trips. 3.  Don't copy internet printables - Enough said - if they are copied they are fraud.  Don't do it!  Again, there are security measures in place on printable coupons and if they are copies of the original you will be found out.  Plus, it goes back to hurting legitimate coupon users and we don't want that! 4.  Be wary of PDF coupons - Most companies have steered away from using PDF files for their online coupon prints (although there are still some that use it!).  If you receive a PDF file from a friend or see it posted somewhere - be sure to check it out and see if it is valid.  The reason I say this concerning specifically PDF's is that you can print as many as you would like.  There is a huge list of invalid coupons listed here - and I would bet a lot of them probably came as a PDF.  Bricks coupons are mostly used now as there is a limit of 2 per computer.

Teaching Thursdays: The Language Of Coupons

question
BOGO, ECBs, SS, RP...........what does it all mean?? I think one of the most confusing things for someone starting out using coupons and surfing deal sites is all the lingo that is involved.  As couponers, we have our own language and acronyms.  Once you learn it - it's pretty simple - but until then it is definitely foreign! There are several categories of language for coupons, I feel like they can be broken down by insert information, types of coupons, specific store language, and denominations of coupon. INSERT INFORMATION SS- Smart Source RP - Red Plum P&G - Proctor & Gamble GM - General Mills TYPES OF COUPONS Inserts - Those coupons listed above that will come from your weekly newspaper or from ordering coupons Blinkies - Found in the stores, often from a small machine that is blinking (hence, a blinkie) Tearpads - My favorite!  Small tearpads of coupons often located near the product (please only take as many as you can reasonably use!) Peelies - These are found on the product and are meant to be used on that product as you purchase it that day.  Peelies are considered part of the packaging and should be used for that product Catalina - These are special coupons that will print at the checkout based on what you purchased during your trip.  You can check out my current catalina page to see what offers are currently available.  OYNO also goes along with catalinas - on your next order.  Catalinas typically require you to purchase "x" of a product and you'll receive a catalina good for "x" amount of dollars OYNO. IP or Printable - A coupon that was printed from a site on the internet SPECIFIC STORE LANGUAGE ECBs - Extra Care Bucks - CVS "money" that is available on certain deals throughout the week.  Can be used for almost anything in the store (excludes alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, etc) CRT - Cash Register Tape - Also most often found at CVS.  These are coupons for specific products that will print at the end of your receipt after checkout.  A lot of times these can be combined with manufacture coupons as they are store coupons! RR - Register Rewards - Similar to CVS ECBs - a Register Reward is Walgreen's "money".  Register Rewards are issued due to buying certain products from the weekly ad.  One thing to note about Register Rewards - if you purchase Huggies and receive a Register Reward for buying Huggies, then you use that Register Rewards to buy more Huggies, you won't receive another Register Reward.  Make sense?  You must buy another manufactures product if you are going to use that Register Reward you just received and expect to get back more Register Rewards. IVC - Instant Value Coupon - Issued by Walgreen's typically in a monthly booklet.  These can be found near the ads or back by your pharmacy.  IVC coupons can be combined with manufacture coupons for maximum savings! MM - Meijer Mealbox Coupons - These are store coupons issued by Meijer that are available to print off of Meijer's site.  You can combine Meijer Mealbox coupons with manufacture coupons to make a great deal! YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary - This basically means that the deal "should" work but depending on what cashier you have, what manager is working, etc - the deal may not work.  Sometimes this is also listed regarding clearance deals or regional deals. DENOMINATIONS OF COUPONS BOGO - Buy One Get One FREE $1.00/2 - Receive $1.00 off for purchasing 2 products B2G1 - Buy Two and Get One FREE Related Posts with Thumbnails
